Summer DIY: Build A Backyard Theater

08/09/2018

Summer is the perfect season to engage in fun outdoor activities. It’s also that time of the year when movie theaters show blockbuster hits. But did you know that you don’t have to go downtown to catch your favorite film? A backyard movie theater will give you the same cinematic experience in the comfort of your own home. You can do this all by yourself when you have the right materials and a dash of creativity!

Clear your backyard. Regardless of your backyard’s size, it’s important to clear the way for the movie theater. This is best applied when your backyard is designed like an open-space lawn. But if a garden, trees, hedges, or any other decor gets in the way,  you can be creative in design without uprooting or removing any of them.

Use the right materials. Consider the basics. A projector and a wide wall with a flat surface or a cloth are enough to constitute a screen. A bluetooth speaker can provide you the audio. Spare chairs can offer you seats. A laptop, connected to the projector, can play the film. So, you don’t have to spend a ton of money. And the money you do spend can be on the fun details and accessories like chairs and/or cozy blankets!  You can serve popcorn to your guests after preparing some in the kitchen.

Choose a good film. The viewing experience will not be complete without the film. Although you can’t watch the latest blockbusters the movie theaters show, you can choose any available ones on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and many other licensed movie-streaming sites. Just make sure that these aren’t pirated, which leads to the next point.

Don’t profit from it. Selling tickets for a film-viewing activity without the permission of the filmmaker can lead you straight behind bars. Earning from someone else’s hard work without their knowledge is illegal, especially when this involves copyright. Film-viewing is fun, but don’t make a business out of it in your own backyard.

Don’t disturb your neighbors. As your backyard is exposed outdoors, the audio might interrupt others who live close to you. Conduct the film-viewing with discretion and consideration. Since the heat can be unbearable during summer, the evening would be the ideal time to watch outside. Make sure that the sound isn’t too loud to wake the neighbors up.

Building your own backyard movie theater can be easy with the right materials and some good-old-fashioned creativity!  Plus, it’s also an incredible summer activity! If you have a movie theater in your backyard, we’d love to see pictures! Send us photos at margo.allan@compass.com.
